What is Supported Independent Living?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is NDIS funding for the support you need to live in your own home: help with personal care, cooking, cleaning, medication, getting to appointments, managing money and the day-to-day decisions of running a household. It usually means workers rostered to the house for most of the day and overnight.

SIL pays for the people, not the building. The house is paid for by rent, as it is for any tenant, or by Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) funding where your plan includes it. The NDIA approves SIL on a Roster of Care that sets out how many hours of support the home needs and how they are shared between housemates.

Prevail Care is registered with the NDIS Commission for Daily Tasks/Shared Living and Supported Independent Living, and delivers SIL across the Perth metro area from our office in the Perth CBD.

Who is SIL for?

SIL is for people who need support most of the day, every day, and who want to live in their own home rather than with family or in a facility. Typically that means a person with an intellectual disability, psychosocial disability, autism or acquired brain injury who needs help with several daily tasks and benefits from someone being there overnight.

We also support people in SIL who have come out of hospital, out of custody or out of a placement that broke down. Prevail Care is one of the few Perth SIL providers set up for participants with a forensic history or a behaviour support plan, and we support children, young people and adults.

What living in a Prevail Care home is like

  • A home chosen for you. We lease the property after we know who is moving in, so the suburb, the layout and the housemates fit the person rather than the other way round.
  • A small, regular team. The same workers across the week, with a backup team you have met. Rosters follow what each person actually does on each day.
  • Your routine, not ours. You choose when you get up, what you eat and how you spend your time. Workers support decisions; they do not make them for you.
  • Health looked after. Medication given against the signed chart, appointments booked and attended, and health plans every worker reads before their first shift.
  • Behaviour support done properly. Where there is a behaviour support plan, workers are trained in it. Restrictive practices are used only where lawfully authorised and are reported as the NDIS Commission requires.
  • Records shared with consent. Shift notes and incident reports are shared with the people you nominate, and only what is required.
  • A duty phone, always. Problems are triaged by a manager on the duty phone, not left to the next business day.

My Dad used Prevail Care for daily supports and he was reluctant at first โ€ฆ he was so appreciative of the staff and the level of professionalism and genuine care was next level. โ€ฆ You wonโ€™t find a better company out there who not only put us first but also look after their staff.

How SIL funding works

Four steps. We do the paperwork with your support coordinator; you make the decisions.

1. Home and Living request

You or your coordinator ask the NDIA for Home and Living supports, setting out why SIL rather than drop-in support is reasonable and necessary.

2. Roster of Care

We prepare the roster with you: hours of support across weekdays, weekends and nights. The NDIA uses it to set the SIL budget.

3. The home and the agreement

We lease and set up a suitable home, agree the supports, rent and house arrangements in a plain-language service agreement.

4. Move in

Visits first, a trial stay if you want one, then moving day. The support plan is written with you in the first weeks and reviewed at every plan review.

SIL for people leaving custody or on an order

Finding a SIL provider that will accept a participant on parole, bail or a community order is the hardest part of many release plans. Prevail Care’s parent company is Care and Reintegration Pty Ltd; reintegration is what we were set up for.

We plan the placement before release with the lawyer, Community Corrections and the support coordinator, lease a home that fits the conditions of the order, and roster workers trained in trauma-informed practice. Read about justice support.

SIL questions people ask us

SIL pays for the support workers in your home. SDA pays for the building itself when a person needs a specially designed home. Most people in SIL do not have SDA, and you can have SIL in an ordinary rented house.

No. SIL can fund support for one person living alone where the NDIA agrees it is reasonable and necessary. Where shared living suits you, we match housemates carefully and you meet them before you decide.

Prevail Care leases the home and sets it up around the people who will live in it, so a placement is not limited to whatever happens to be vacant. You pay rent and your own living costs, as any tenant does.

Because we source homes on demand, the honest answer is usually yes, within the time it takes to lease and furnish a suitable property. Call us and we will tell you what is possible for your situation and timeframe.

In most of our homes, yes, where housemates agree and the lease allows it. Tell us early so we can find a property that suits.

We work on it in the house first. If it cannot be resolved, we help you move to another home and your funding moves with you.

That depends on the NDIA, not on us. Allow two to four months from a Home and Living request to a decision. We help your support coordinator put the evidence together so it is not sent back.

Yes. It is one of the reasons Prevail Care exists. See our justice support page for how pre-release planning works.
